LA Past Lives / Spring 2010
Final Reflection
Our proposal design for the renovation of the 6th Street Viaduct, in my opinion, came out to be a success. The solution we ended up with meant more than just a cosmetic design for the bridge. It was a solution that could possibly benefit the city socially and economically. Due to the double decker approach, we were able to have this promenade above which could provide space for food venues and pedestrian circulation. These food venues are an awesome opportunity for the citizens in the periphery of the city to come and share their diverse cultural cuisine with the rest of the city. The bridge will act more of a transitional point for downtown and Boyle Heights. This solution is not only meant for one bridge, it is meant to be followed by other bridges along the LA River so that the life on the bridges is not so baron aside from vehicles. Pedestrians must be able to enjoy the river as well and not from inside their cars. Greenery also wraps around the spiral that becomes a major part of the structural support for the bridge. Bringing greenery back into the city of asphalt and concrete is definitely needed. This design proposal is meant to create a beautiful bridge that brings life back into the city and possibly a new pedestrian culture.
